Last night was our latest elected officials dinner. It was hosted by the city of Briaroaks, but held in Burleson at the First United Methodist Church which also catered the dinner under the skillful direction of Mrs. Marzie Bartee.
I was pleasantly surprised at the turnout from the Joshua City Council. All but one member attended which is certainly a record for the dinners I've attended over the last year. Erika and I sat with new council member Jerry Moore and his wife, Donna, and had a fun evening.
Chesapeake Energy was the presenter and our local public affairs supervisor, Justin Bond, did a good job and provided some impressive facts on the impact the gas drilling has and will provide to the local economies. Chesapeake, by the way, is donating another vehicle to the City of Joshua this week when they present a Chevy Tahoe to our police department to replace one of our aging unmarked vehicles.
The door prizes were, as usual, a lot of fun and once again most attendees left with something in hand. Erika and I scored big with a $5 Chili's gift certificate and a new American Flag set for the house. Win!
The more of these I attend the more value I see in being able to spend at least a few minutes shaking hands with people I usually see in an official capacity and chit-chatting about non-official things. It's nice to smile and joke a bit and get to know some folks from around the county.
If I'm not mistaken Joshua is hosting the next dinner for the group in August. We started brainstorming last night about some good door prizes!
A.J.
