Contact your representative and ask them to sign the discharge petition for HR554. This resolution would require a 72 hour internet posting of all non-emergency legislation so we the people could read it and contact our representatives before they can vote on it. It would also obviously allow time for them to read it themselves in many cases. Too often legislation is rushed to vote with no possibility of it being read.
The Democrat leadership in the House is trying to keep this resolution from coming to the floor for a vote, but with a majority petition we can get past that. The petition needs 36 more signatures so click through the link above and see if your rep has signed or not and encourage them to sign if they have not.
There are 32 Democrats who put their names down as co-sponsors of the resolution, but now have not signed the petition. They need extra-special encouragement because this is politics at it's best. They can brag back home that they co-sponsored the resolution, but they won't go the extra mile to get it to a vote. My very own rep Chet Edwards is one of them.
It's ridiculous that not every single member of congress would want to have a few days to review legislation and hear from their constituency, but then they'd have to be accountable and they don't want that.
