The world did not end. The SCOTUS decision on homosexual marriage did not change my life . It will not change my life. It really has nothing to do with me personally . I disagree with it and I voted for people that disagree with it, but the truth of the situation is that the decision was a legal one and not a moral or religious one. I think the justices on the side of the majority (Supreme Court majority, not American majority) think it was a moral decision, but we do not share the same view on morality.
So what now? I've seen a lot of talk already about how Christians or the church should respond. I think the major theme is simply prayer and love. Good ideas. Applicable in all situations. Probably needed a little more of that before today, but that's OK too. Personally, I do not think a formal response from any pulpit is waranted. What are we going to do, restate God's position on homosexuality? It's been shouted enough for everyone to have heard by now.
I think what we do now is just be close to our families; our wives, husbands, kids and church family. Let's mourn a little. Mourn another loss. We've survived 40 years post Roe v. Wade and we'll survive this. I think we get intentional about living out a Godly family and re-enforcing it in our sermons. Let's just get on with what we should be doing anyway; studying God's word and striving everyday to conform more to the image of Christ.
I also think a necessary conversation needs to take place in churches (not in public forums) to form positions on homosexuality. I don't mean whether it's right or wrong, I mean on what to tell someone who is gay about conforming to a life with Christ. This is the nitty gritty, folks. The avoidance of the subject and lack of clarity contributed to yesterday's news and has been a disservice to our congregations and homosexual people.
I was right. The dawn is breaking in the east. The darkness is over and a new day is here. Empty your heart to the one who can truly rule rightly . If you don't know what to say then take the advice of the band 7eventh Time Down and "Just say Jesus".
