I wasn't planning any major commentary on the State of the Union address the President gave last night until after reading one particular line from The Heritage Foundation's rebuttal this morning. On the subject of centralized government spending as being the key to America's future success they said "China will beat us in raw bureaucratic efficiency every time." Our government cannot compete with a communist or socialist government in efficiency of putting dollars to work. Our foundationaly capitalist, limited government has too many checks and balances built in to efficiently take a top down program and put it into practice with any semblance of speed and low cost. To the contrary the leftists that have worked so hard to change our system over to such a model, but still had to work within the framework of our founding, have grown the size of our government and had it work to their detriment (and the rest of us). Socialism and Capitalism cannot co-exist. They are oil and water and always pushing away from one another. Social Security and Medicare are perfect examples of programs that managed to make it through the system and have grown ever since. That's what social programs do, it's their natural progression right or wrong.
The United States of America is like no other civilization before. Throughout history people have been ruled by dictators, kings and tyrants. The odds were against the visionaries that dared to dream the dream that we are today and it's no surprise that world pressures would push those among us susceptible to ideas of an easier existence into moving towards what is being sold as better. The path away from freedom is much easier than the one towards it.
