To the man I met today who doesn't want to vote anymore.

It was easy to see from our seconds long interaction today that you are fed up. You politely listened to my brief introduction and accepted the card I handed you so that's why I'm writing this, because maybe you'll visit my website and end up here and you'll know I'm writing about you.

You said you were fed up with politics and voting and that you just weren't going to do it anymore. I wonder what led you to this position? To such a disgusted, harsh attitude about one of the most precious rights and duties we have as Americans. It is, after all, the right to vote that allows us our unalienable rights to Life, Liberty and The Pursuit of Happiness.

I'm not going to go on and on with words of support for you that conjur up images of a flag waving behind me as I speak and the Star Spangled Banner playing in the background. I think you need some tough love.

The thing about elections is they go one way or the other. There's no second place. Your candidate wins or loses, your issue passes or fails. People that tasted victory in the last election would be willing to vote again so I'm pegging you as one who came up on the losing side. A sore loser I'd say. I'm going to cut you a little slack though because where we're at as a nation now and with the things that seem to be in the works with our congress, man, we are really far from the track that our founding fathers set us on. I get disgusted too sometimes. After last November's election and the letters I had written before and after to our representatives I was feeling a little like you...that my vote didn't count or that I couldn't make a difference, but now I know that's not true.

You know what I was before March 5, 2009? A husband, a father, a son, a brother, a business owner, but on that day I turned in my ballot application and became a candidate because I realized I could make a difference. Win or lose my campaign is a success because I'm meeting other Americans who care about what's going on. You've got to get involved. That involvement can be small or big, but you'll get out of it what you put into it. Whatever your position is on an issue there are others who think like you. Find them and get involved. You could make a donation, put a sign in your yard, go to a rally or something else, but get involved. Maybe you did all that and think it didn't matter, but it did. You can't give up though. You can't just give up on America and that's what you're doing when you choose to no longer participate. I disagree with bailing out companies because they are "too big to fail", but I believe that the United States is too great to fail. Those who want to destroy what our founders created will not stop and they will not give up so neither can we. We cannot afford to lose even one voter who still believes in this great land.

No matter how hard it gets stay involved.
